The K-12 Crested Butte Community School (CBCS) is a college preparatory public school in Crested Butte, Colorado, with a total enrollment of approximately 684 students. This school is a wonderful addition to the community of Crested Butte. With its unique design, CBCS is separated into 3 main buildings- elementary, middle and high schools, with a library, cafeteria & gym connecting them all together.
CBCS was built in 1998 and is part of the Gunnison Watershed School District RE1J. The Crested Butte Community School offers a semester schedule with approximately 80% of its seniors attending four year institutions after graduation. It is continually acknowledged as an outstanding institution. In 2013, CBCS received the John Irwin School of Excellence Award, placing CBCS among the top 8.0% of high schools across Colorado for student achievement - for the eighth time! And, US News and World Report recognized CBCS as a gold medal school in the spring of 2014, with an overall ranking of 6th in the state of Colorado.
From a parent's perspective, the moment you enter CBCS, the feeling is very warm and welcoming with large carpeted hallways, art displayed throughout from all ages on the walls. The elementary end offers open lockers with a drain system in place to dry those snowy boots. There are larger lockers for both middle and high schoolers to store books and after school sports bags. The teacher to student ratio is 15:1, better than the state average of 18:1. Not only is there a host of opportunities to explore and learn for all ages, but the teachers are always readily available at the drop of a hat for extra help with schoolwork, etc. Because Crested Butte is such a small community, you often see the teachers out enjoying nature, whether its biking during the summer or skiing during the winter months. In fact, 70% or our teachers either already hold a Master’s degree or are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program. Several of our teachers are even extreme athletes and compete in local races and events.
Crested Butte Community School's mission statement is: “to ensure that each student maximizes his or her potential and becomes a contributing citizen by successfully completing a standards based education of exceptional quality in an atmosphere of high expectations and demonstrated achievement.”
The graduation requirements for CBCS are 26 credits as follows:
Social Studies: 3
Science: 3 (2 lab)
World Language: 1
Fine/Applied Arts: 1
Physical Education: 1
