Before the first miners arrived in the late 1800's, Ute Indians utilized the upper end of the Crested Butte valley as their summer hunting grounds. Gradually, they were pushed out by the gold and silver booms of the 1880's, which created Crested Butte as the supply center for the outlying mining camps in areas such as Gothic and Irwin townsites.
Coal was discovered in early 1880 and sustained the town for the next 60 years. In 1952 the last mine (Big Mine) was closed and the town dwindled until the ski resort was developed in the 1960's. This marked the beginning of Crested Butte's rebirth and since then the old buildings and homes have been lovingly renovated and restored by their new owners.
